Emporia, KS, claims it is the "founding city" of Veterans Day, in 1953. In 1991 they created an All Veterans park and memorial, featuring a military chopper, tank and anchor. The annual Veterans Day Parade proceeds down Commercial Street.

All Veterans Memorial

Emporia, KS is the founding city of Veterans Day - approved by Congress in 2003. Constructed in 1991, this memorial pays tribute to all veterans in all military service. Features a World War II Sherman Army tank, Vietnam Veterans Memorial with a Huey helicopter, Purple Heart Memorial, and memorial to Emporian Sgt. Timmerman. Every year there is a Veterans Day Parade down Commercial Street.

Emporia claims to be the "founding city" of Veterans Day (Birmingham, AL has shored up its own claim of first and longest-running Veterans Day observance, since 1947). Emporia's US Representative Ed Rees presented the bill to Congress to make it an official national holiday, which was signed into law in 1954.
