Savannah's Waving Girl A photo of the Waving Girl. [Craig S. Thom, 06/14/2001][RA: This 20-foot-tall statue pays tribute to Florence Martus, who for some reason greeted every ship that entered the port of Savannah from 1887 to 1931 by waving to it. Made by the same guy who sculpted the Iwo Jima monument, dedicated in 1971, the statue depicts Florence, waving a towel or flag with both hands while a collie stands next to her. The original design had Florence with wild hair, bare feet, and a mongrel dog, but the local club that was paying for the statue made the sculptor change all that.]
