Tallest Totem Pole East of the Rockies
The Totem Pole was worth the 15 minutes off route to see! There's a park close by, and small town businesses.

Just wanted to submit something I found at my mom and dad's house -- a souvenir wooden nickel from the "Home of the Tallest Totem Pole East of the Rockies."
[Tara Lancaster, 06/14/2006]I am from Abingdon, IL. On the Main Street boulevard uptown stands the tallest totem pole east of the Rocky Mountains. Although not built by native Americans (but by townspeople in the 70s), the totem pole is quite a sight. A few years ago, it was taken down to be repainted.
[Tara Hanna, 05/13/2001]The 83 ft. tall totem pole wascarved by artist Steve Greenquist in 1969. July 2004 - V Fornander reports: "At the time it was being carved (1968-9?), I was a senior in high school there, The residents believed that it was going to be the tallest totem pole in the world, to bring tourists. An art student from Illinois State University, I believe, was hired to complete the task. Unfortunately, a taller one was built in Canada not too long after, hence the title, Tallest Totem Pole East of the Rockies. "
Spent inherited $ on "Tallest Totem Pole East of Mississippi" instead of recreation for kids in early 70s. Grew up there.
[Thomas Gardner, 03/10/1998]A wise move. Today's "kids of all ages" can enjoy the Totem Pole.
