live in Chapin on the shore of Lake Murray. An island in the lake, Bomb
Island, is the largest known roosting place for purple martins. During the
summer months we are told up to 700,000 Purple Martins roost here
nightly. It has become a popular attraction at sundown for local boaters to
view these birds as they arrive for the night.
Note: Bomb Island is named for the Doolittle Raiders who used it as a
practice bombing range prior to their raid on Tokyo during World War II.
