Burlington, Iowa: Snake Alley: A Very Crooked Street

A combatant in the World's Crookedest Street battle, in an unexpected place. No traffic back-ups to drive down Snake Alley, unlike San Francisco's more famous crooked street.

Snake Alley

If you drive south across the small valley from the lower end of Snake Alley, you can get a telephoto shot looking up the alley.

Snake Alley - A Very Crooked Street

Now I've driven down both Lombard St. and Snake Alley. Lombard is much more fun, but I'd love to go tubing down Snake Alley in the wintertime!! Anyone know if that's possible?

Snake Alley - World's Crookedest Street?

Today we visited Burlington, Iowa on our drive from Boring, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. I thought it would be great to have my wife, Pamalee, drive down Snake Alley. We maneuvered down several times...it was great!

Snake Alley - Cruel Driving Instructor

I remember Snake Alley in Burlington, Iowa because as a student living in Winfield, Iowa we drove down it during driver's ed training. You could only drive downhill, as it is or at least was a one way street.

Snake Alley

It is true that Snake Alley is closed to vehicular traffic, but only seasonally or for special events such as the Snake Alley Art Fair and the Snake Alley Criterium. Seasonally, Snake Alley is closed from roughly November through April to vehicles. As proof that it is open to vehiclular traffic I drove it just yesterday.
