La Porte, Texas: San Jacinto Monument: Tallest Shaft in the U.S.
15 feet taller than the Washington Monument, just because. Opened in 1939. Celebrates an otherwise forgotten battle in the War of Texas Independence. There's a museum in its base, but the elevator to the top is currently closed for repairs.

- East edge of Houston. Drive east on Hwy 225/Pasadena Fwy, then exit onto Texas Independence Pkwy (La Porte). Drive north. When the road divides in two, remain in the left lane, continue through the tall stone park gates, and turn right into the park.
