Not exactly a mad scientist, but Harold Eugene Edgerton invented the strobe light in 1931 that makes stop motion photography possible. He was born in nearby Fremont. See drops of water plop into crowns, super cold science and other fun stuff. This little museum has a lot of neat-o experiments and examples of his work. Very kid friendly.
