Stuckie the Mummified Dog
It's worth a trip -- the museum operates on donations only and is well done (their hours were reduced due to the Economy). Just outside of Waycross Georgia. Go visit the Okefenokee Swamp and save an hour for Stuckie!
[Erik, 06/12/2011]A popular exhibit at Waycross, GA's Southern Forest World, a dog that died and became petrified while stuck in a hollow tree, finally has a name. The museum conducted a contest in which anyone could suggest a name for the dog....
[10/26/2002] Complete News StorySouthern Forest World is a sleepy little run-down museum dedicated to educating people about the exciting world of southern forestry. It is deadly boring. However, hidden among the non-working animatronic talking tree and photos of the largest trees in Georgia, is the infamous mummified dog. This unfortunate animal once made the mistake of getting stuck inside a hollow tree and perishing there, and now is displayed for posterity inside a cross-section of log, between 2 sheets of plexiglass.
On all of Southern Forest World's advertising, the phrase "See the mummified dog!" appears, and, should you happen to glance at the guest book when you visit, you will see that most visitors, in the column labled "Reason for visit" have written something along the lines of "Heard about dog,","wanted to see dog", etc. The guide behind the desk told me "That's all anyone wants to see. I think it's SICK!"
[Katherine Bates, 09/19/2001]In Waycross, Georgia at the Southern Forest World, there is a petrified dog in a tree. Years ago the dog ran up a hollow tree, probably chasing an animal. It got stuck and died in the tree, perserved inside the tree. It is now on exhibit there.
