Ladies Room Jail Cells

Built in 1876, the Sandwich Opera House/City Hall is in the National Registry of Historic Theaters. Proud civil servants in the City Hall are happy to show you around. Be sure to ask to see the ladies' room! Originally it was the local jail: iron bars still hang in front of the stalls and 120-year-old graffiti by past prisoners is still carved in the walls . There's also a tunnel under the stage -- the only way to get to the opposite side of the theater until a backstage was built in the 1980s. [KathyB, 01/02/1999]
