Dublin Zoo got its first pair of lions in 1855, and when food supplies dwindled during the 1916 Rising the lions were fed while the other animals had to go hungry. On March 20, 1927, the lion Cairbre was born in Dublin, and went on to international fame in the logo of MGM film studios. A few years ago there an attempt to get some DNA off of the lion rug in McPherson. I have yet to see any feedback on that. But the information above would lead any rational person to conclude that the skin in McPherson is NOT from the original Leo the Lion, which people saw buried in Gillette, New Jersey.
[Joseph DuPont, 03/20/2015]The museum is in a new building that opened last year and some exhibits are still under construction. Leo has been taken off exhibit for restoration. The museum was still an interesting stop, but no lion.
[Cheryl Speights, 07/18/2014]MGM's Leo the Lion's hide is in the McPherson's town museum, upstairs on the second floor. Don't know the number to call - located in a 1920's restored mansion. McPherson is a very small town -- hard to miss the attraction.
