Preston, Connecticut: Snoopy Rock

A boulder, probably left over from the Ice Age, has been painted with a smiling profile of famous cartoon dog Snoopy. A large plywood Charlie Brown stands adjacent, just in case you don't see the resemblance.

Address:
147 Brickyard Rd, Preston, CT
Directions:
From downtown Norwich drive east, cross the river, following Main St./Hwy 2. Drive a little under two miles. Turn left at the stoplight onto Brickyard Rd. Drive one mile. You'll see a little gravel parking area on the left. Park there (weather permitting), then follow the grassy path that angles to the right back to the rock. Private property; please be respectful.

Never go in the rain. I went with my friend, and the car got stuck in the mud, and I had to push the car up the hill in the pouring rain for 15 minutes, and we still got stuck and had to wait for a tow truck.

Eastern Connecticut seems to have a thing for painting beagles on large rocks. There are three within a few miles radius of this one. This region of the state is considered to be its quiet corner; not much happens, so perhaps they paint rocks to pass the time. Or maybe they really like beagles. The other beagle rocks are less specific, but this one is definitely Snoopy. It is a big boulder, and worth seeing if you are passing through the area.
