Salem, Virginia: Butt Hollow Road Sign (Gone)

Butt Hollow Road sign on I-81 in Salem, VA. Yes, there is a road named Butt Hollow. I know it is hard to say and a little hard to swallow.

And since there is a big deal about the sign being gone - I think it was about time and I DON'T THINK IT WAS WRONG.

The doctor it was named after has been gone a long, long time. I am sure he would like it know what happened to that sign... My mother wrote this and ask me to submit it (By the way, she did try to have the street name changed).

The last time I drove down I-81 I didn't see the Butt Hollow Road sign anymore. I was disappointed, as it was usually the highlight of our trips to see my parents in Tennessee (I would start laughing like Butt-Head and read the sign to my wife). I have been looking forward to the day my kids are old enough to be reduced to hysterics by the sign, and hopefully it will return. It only had a sign with the state route number when I passed through in September.

On 81S, outside of Salem, VA on the way to Blacksburg, VA -- Home of the VA Tech Hokies (my alma mater)-- there is a road sign that reads: "Butt Hollow Road." You see it on the right side of the highway, and you don't even need to slow down. We always found it amusing and our school newspaper did a story on what was actually on Butt Hollow Road. I think it is just houses.
