A life-size black bear, reared on its hind legs, carved from wood by an unknown artist, greets visitors to a trail that used to be a state highway.

Directions:
From Chesapeake drive south on US Hwy 17 for 6.5 miles. Turn right at the brown highway sign for the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail. Drive a half-mile, then turn left. Drive another half-mile until the road ends. You'll see Chessie straight ahead.
