Giant Chicken The restaurant that this chicken was located in front of belonged to my grandmother, Marilyn (Heaton) Hammock. Everyone in the community knew who she was, and was always made to feel like they were family when they dined there. Unfortunately, she became ill, and was no longer able to take care of the restaurant any longer, so she had to close . The land was sold, and the chicken was moved to the fairgrounds. Giant Chicken Check out the giant white chicken at the entrance to the Owen County Indiana fairgrounds in Spencer. It used to be an advertising gimmick for a drive-in restaurant north of Spencer. When that business folded and the ground was sold for a large factory, local protests forced the city fathers to rescue the well-known chicken. The high school Latin club even climbed the chicken one year to place a laurel wreath on her head in honor of Latin week at the school. [Chris Lowder, 08/18/1998]
