Bring a picnic lunch and a couple nerf guns or a flag to be captured!

What a great place to explore our earth's geology! The gift shop had a free brochure explaining what these concretions are and how they came to be. Looking out over the Kansas terrain, you see flat land... and then these sandstone concretions pop up in a area about the size of a couple of football fields. You are amazed; how did they happen to be here, what are they, why aren't they anywhere else, how in the world? For a mere $3 you can have the adventure of discovery (and jaw-dropping amazement), learn Kansas history, feel how rough the surfaces are, walk on nice trails, picnic in a gazebo. The only thing commercial about this place is the little gift shop, and it's closed after Labor Day (There is a slot to deposit the fee.).

Great photo ops, great hide and seek, great day. I'll go again and take a picnic lunch and closed-toed shoes.

Rock City

On a peaceful hilltop overlooking the Solomon River valley in north central Kansas, in an area of cedar trees and bluestem grasses, loom nearly 200 mysterious spheres of Dakota sandstone. These rare concretions, ranging up to 27 feet in diameter, have been designated a National Natural Landmark. This is the only place on Earth to see such a large number of these unique geological oddities. A side trip here is well worth your time. A modest entry fee helps the largely volunteer staff maintain the site.

Rock City Park

ROCK CITY is not a highly developed tourist atraction. Basic improvements, such as a road and the information center, have been made by Rock City, Inc. ROCK CITY is basically as it has been for thousands of years

So, is Rock City just "a bunch of rocks"? YES! It's a bunch of big rocks....it's a BIG bunch of BIG rocks... scientific "bunch of rocks"...a "geological bunch of rocks". Rock City is a "bunch of rocks" that is peaceful yet exciting, relaxing yet stimulating, challenging, mysterious, a place to ponder"

Rock City

In Minneapolis, Kansas, one can find Rock City. This Rock City contains rocks that were left prior to the Ice Age. There are rocks that look like a turtle, steamboat, birdbath, twin sisters, kissing lips, and so forth. This was surely a bizarre sight, since we had been to Rock City in Chattanooga, Tennessee and expected something different. These rocks are in a big field.
