Luehr's Bull.

Henry Leuhr's Giant Bull

The deteriorating bull that sits by the Buchanan Bar is free to haul away, I am told by the bar owner, Kris W. She says "The bull was put in place by the previous bar owner who let it go to hell." She also said the Bull is too expensive and time consuming to repair as the structure has rotted. I had a great time with the bar owner over several Smith and Kerns, my favorite North Dakota drink.

Jan 2007 - The bulls is reported as gone.

Henry Luehr's Bull

I drove by the bull just a couple days ago, and he's getting a new coat--it looks like whoever is doing it is turning the bull from hereford to charolais, as the new covering is beige. You can still see the hereford markings around his tail and legs, though, so his new look doesn't seem to be completed yet.

Large Bull

Giant bull statue is easy to find and right outside a small bar. Very bad shape. Wood framed, chicken wire wrapped and concrete covered. Both sides are covered by colored tin now and under the head is wide open. Lots of bird nests surrounding the genital area. It was a scene right out of "The Birds" as I walked up to it. The birds shot out of it and circled in both directions the whole time I was there. I was told the bull was going to be taken down yrs ago, not repaired. Don't know what the current plan is but I was told it was even going to be burned down. Evidence of that is on the front right leg--black charred wood.

Henry Luehr's Bull

The bull is still located by the side of Hwy 52/281 in Buchanan, ND. However, the bar next door is now known as the "Buchanan Bar" rather than "Chief's". There is no sign or lights to really indicate it's a bar, so if you drive by after dark (as we did) you might miss it.

The bull is still in a state of disrepair. We did go into the bar for a round and had a nice conversation with the bartender, Todd. He was quite surprised to hear that we were there to see the bull and even more surprised that it was on the internet. Apparently the son of the man who made the bull lives up the road. There was no mention of any plan to refurbish it, which is unfortunate. The bar is definitely worth a stop!
