First Maple Syrup in Outer Space

The Space Syrup may not be on public display much longer. Gray's Sugarhouse in Ashfield, Massachusetts, home of the First Maple Syrup in Outer Space , is closing at the end of the sugar season this year after 41 years in business. The Gray family will continue to produce maple syrup and maple products. When I asked Lyle Gray, son of family patriarch Willie Gray, he said that the Space Syrup would remain untouched as a souvenir of the space shuttle Discovery. Right now it's in a little vitrine by the cash register, complete with a Discovery patch.

Gray's Sugarhouse restaurant closed in 2003, but the Sugarhouse itself remains open and selling maple products. We hope that the Space Syrup is still by the cash register....

First Maple Syrup in Space

Gray's Sugarhouse has two small containers of maple syrup that were taken up by local astronaut Dan Barry during a space shuttle flight. They're behind the counter at the cash register. As far anyone knows, this is the first maple syrup to go into space.
