Church of the Presidents: Two Dead Presidents in the Basement
John Adams (President #2) and his son John Quincy Adams (President #6) were lifetime members of the United First Parish Church in Quincy -- and they're still there, entombed in its basement along with their wives. Visitors walk down a set of stairs in the "Church of the Presidents," past an iron gate, and into a low-ceilinged crypt with paint flaking off of its rock walls. The big, blocky, unadorned stone sarcophagi of John, Abigail, John Quincy, and Louisa are lined up: you can wander around freely and even lean on them for photos. It's all refreshingly low-key, and the closest most people will ever get to a U.S. President, dead or alive.
