Church of the Presidents: Two Dead Presidents in the Basement

John Adams (President #2) and his son John Quincy Adams (President #6) were lifetime members of the United First Parish Church in Quincy -- and they're still there, entombed in its basement along with their wives. Visitors walk down a set of stairs in the "Church of the Presidents," past an iron gate, and into a low-ceilinged crypt with paint flaking off of its rock walls. The big, blocky, unadorned stone sarcophagi of John, Abigail, John Quincy, and Louisa are lined up: you can wander around freely and even lean on them for photos. It's all refreshingly low-key, and the closest most people will ever get to a U.S. President, dead or alive.

Dead Presidents

A couple of years ago we took a vacation in Boston. A couple of attractions you may want to look at are "The Church of the Presidents" (United First Parish Church) in Quincy. It is the only church with two dead Presidents in the basement. [Herr Professor Doctor, 03/12/1999]

[RA: Another Quincy first, an occurrence on July 22, 1963: Irwin Wayne and friends were exiting the Wonder Bowl on the Southern Artery when hundreds of pebbles started falling from the sky and exploding.]
