Michelangelo of Montana Church
Beautiful little Catholic Church in a dusty Montana town. Well-preserved images in a tidy building make this worth a stop.
[Jennifer Coyne, 07/25/2021]The cathedral-like St. Ignatius Mission church was built in the early 1890s out of nearby timber and a million bricks, made from local clay. Its interior walls and ceilings are covered with 58 original Renaissance-style frescos and murals by Brother Joseph Carignano, who painted them all in 14 months. He was the Mission cook.
The church, called one of the three most beautiful churches in the world in its National Register of Historic Places listing, is on the Flathead Indian Reservation; two of Carignano's paintings are of the Salish Lord and Lord's mother as Native Americans.
Next to the Mission is a museum and gift shop, and the log home that was the original Sisters' residence when they first arrived.
