Volcano in City Limits

Regarding your comment about Mt. Tabor being the only volcano within city limits in the US. What about volcanoes in Hawaii? [Shay Fritz, 06/03/2009]

Volcano in City Limits

Known locally as Mt. Tabor, this is the only volcano located within a city limit in any US city. You can view the cinder cone and a few feet away from the parking lot is a kids play area.

Hawaiian legend has it that if you take any volcanic rock you will have bad luck -- the Park Service in Hawaii will tell you that they receive mailbags of volcanic rock every week from people who took the rock and now are returning it. We don't know if Oregon volcanic rock (spent lava) will have the same effect but we don't take chances and we leave it right there. [j. alyce, 01/29/2002]
