Washington, DC - Missing Hoof of Fire Horse #12

Do you have any information about Washington DC's Firehorse #12? Back in the day when firefighters used horses, this horse lost a hoof on the way to a fire and continued pulling until they made it to the scene. Consequently, the horse had to be put down. The hoof remained displayed at the firehouse for a few years until it was turned over to the Smithsonian. For some reason I found this interesting and was wanting more detailed info about the four legged hero. [Dareen White, 02/23/2002]

The only printed public mention we could find is that it was apparently part of the temporary "Nation's Attic" Exhibit in 1980. Anyone have a photo of the elusive hoof?
