Taconic Sculptures - Gaea Head
We spotted this driving up the Taconic Parkway. A big white head seemed out of place, so we investigated. It turns out there's a whole sculpture garden. The big head is just the start. The owner and resident said he's been working there for 25 years.
[Steve Cook, 07/04/2008]Tha Taconic State Parkway is usually a quiet, scenic road. That's one reason why "the giant head" stands out so much. It is a concrete statue of Gaea (Mother Earth) placed on a hill, that can be seen while traveling north on the Taconic. Gaea is surrounded by other sculptures, but most of them can't be seen as clearly from the road. The sculptures were created by Roy Kanwit and you can visit the Taconic Sculpture Park if you want to see them up close.
