Awesome hidden gem! Wasn't sure it was open as the parking lot is closed and used for storage. A little rough, but the two guys working it told us great stories and we got to climb all around the ship! Had it to ourselves to explore.
[KWinn, 07/07/2016]The only surviving heavy cruiser in the U.S. Fleet, the Salem boasts a central 8-inch diameter gun. That's not unusual, but the fact that it's motorized and self-loading makes it the largest fully automatic machine gun in the world.
The ship was mothballed and sealed up in 1959, and towed back to the site of its construction in the Fore River Shipyard, Quincy, MA a few years ago. When they opened it up to convert it into a Maritime Museum, they discovered half-written letters, clothes in the closets, and course information from its last trip still on the navigation boards.
It's a time capsule, some 2 1/2 football fields long.
