Eugene, Oregon - Oregon's Highway 99 - Vague Recollections

This is certainly a vague recollection, but so vivid. Just north of Eugene, Oregon, on what was, even in the 1960s-'70s known as "Old 99," was an Old West type construction of false-front saloons, corrals, and other hovels. Ninety-nine used to be the only north-south highway through this part of Oregon. Parts of it are now Interstate 5. But this remained -- a bunch of old motels and 1950s tourist attractions.

I remember distinctly a series of apple types painted on a black, weathered fencing (Rome, Macintosh, etc). I think there might have even been a Coney Island Funny Face painted somewhere. If anyone else remembers this, please update with the status, although it is probably a quickie-mart by now. I admit that I still look out for Rome apples because of this memory. [M. Salcedo, 06/24/2003]

[RA: Jan. 2004 - According to tipster T. J . Martino Jr.: "Sadly these old-west storefronts were abandoned a few years ago, and bulldozed to the ground a few months ago."]
