Vantage, Washington: Wild Stallion Sculptures

I have been here three times, in 1984, 2000, and 2012. This time I was able to climb the hill that the horses are on. Easy climb, but be careful when coming down because of loose rocks. I spent about 40 minutes on top. I was just wowed about how big and great the horses are when you get there. This is a must stop and see attraction, whether you go all the way up or not.

The climb to the Wild Stallion Sculptures is not difficult, and the pay off is fantastic! Please don't leave "your mark" on the horses. It is painfully tacky!

"Grandfather cuts loose the ponies!" You can view the wild pony sculptures just east of Vantage from the parking lot, or you can get brave and take the hike to the top.

The metal ponies are a lot bigger than they appear to be, practically life-sized. The artwork viewed by millions of passersby is not complete, unfortunately. Before funding got cut short, artist David Govedare envisioned horses contained in a 25,000 lb. steel "Great Basket," and then "Grandfather Spirit" tipped the basket, cutting loose the ponies.

Govedare imagined the great spirit saying "Creatures of this planet, behold, a Great Basket! I send this basket, bearing the gift of life, to all corners of the universe. Now, take these ponies; I am cutting them loose. They will inspire a spirit of free will. They will be a companion for work and play on this planet." I highly recommend visiting the rod-iron beauties, if not for the scenic view and appreciation for the wonderfully thought of artwork, then just to say you did.
