New Orleans, Louisiana - Ernie K-Doe's Mother In Law Lounge

New Orleans Rhythm and Blues singer Ernie K-Doe is best known for his 1961 hit song "Mother In Law". In 1994 he and his wife Antoinette opened up the "Mother in Law" lounge on historic Claiborne Avenue in New Orleans. For years you could find the Self Proclaimed "Emperor of the Universe," Ernie K-Doe himself behind the bar singing along to his songs on the jukebox over an old taxi cab dispatch intercom microphone. Ernie passed away in July, 2001, and received a huge, lavish New Orleans style funeral (only appropriate for an Emperor.) The Mother In Law lounge now serves as a shrine to all things Ernie and is run by his salt of the earth wife.

A life size statue of Ernie was created by artist/musician Jason Poirier and presides over the lounge in full carnival regalia. The walls of the Mother in Law are completely encrusted with photos of Ernie, as well as other New Orleans R&B luminaries and various civil rights figures. The jukebox has got to be one of the best in the country and the atmosphere here is bizarre, yet surprisingly warm and homey (thanks to Antoinette).
