Great Barrington, Massachusetts - Newsboy Fountain This bronze-skinned waif stands proudly as the world's oldest newsboy statue. The monument was erected in 1895 by Colonel William L. Brown, who owned a summer home in the neighborhood and was part-owner of the first New York Daily News (no relation to the tabloid of today). The statue's base features fountainheads for dogs, cats, horses (lion's head) and people (devil's head).
The statue was restored in 1995, just months before a devastating tornado toppled trees all around it. But the Newsboy survived, and was honored on his 100th birthday in October, 1995. [Gary Leveille, 08/24/2008]
