Shrine of the Miracle Tortilla - Smashed!
I traveled to see the Miracle Tortilla and Maria Rubio and her grandson informed me that the shrine is no longer.
In 2005, Mrs. Rubio's granddaughter took the Tortilla to Show and Tell and it was dropped, splintering into a number of pieces.
It still resides in its wooden frame on a bed of cottonballs, but now calls the top drawer of Mrs. Rubio's hutch home. She was kind enough to show me the remnants, however it has lost its glory. She tried to rekindle the magic by showing me a xerox of an old photo of what it used to look like, which was nice of her. She is quite saddened by the loss however.
[Spud Potato Head, 12/21/2006]My wife and I honeymooned in New Mexico in June 1999. One of the "must visit" places was Lake Arthur to see the Sacred Tortilla Shrine. It is still there for all to see, free of charge.
To get there, take Route 285 south from Roswell. When you get to Lake Arthur, make the last left into town. The house is on the left side. If I remember correctly it is the 2nd house and is yellow. The shrine is in the back yard, so be sure to knock on the door to the house first.
