Erie, Pennsylvania - Frogs and Other Citywide Sculptures My son and I, who take many road trips together, visited Cleveland last summer and found nearly 100 10-foot tall guitar sculptures throughout the city. We set aside a whole day to find them, armed with a map of their locations that we picked up at the mall. Back through Erie, Pennsylvania we were surprised to find the city awash in 8-foot tall frog sculptures! This summer (2005) promises more opportunities than ever to find incredible city-wide sculptures. By searching the internet I've found these cities displaying the following sculptures:
- Catalina Island, California - Eagles
- Santa Rosa, California - Charlie Brown Statues
- Rockford, Illinois - Sock Monkeys
- Zion, Illinois - Bees
- Dubuque, Iowa - Frogs
- Halifax, Nova Scotia - Lobsters
- Baltimore, Maryland - Blue Crabs
- Nashville, Tennessee - more of the 10-foot guitars
An added bonus - at the end of summer all the sculptures are auctioned off for area charities. If you want to add some excitement to your roadside travels, go on a sculpture hunt!
[David Jay Goldstein, 05/09/2005][RA: The Community Art blight continues -- there are many more towns in stages of preparation, creation, exhibition or auctioning of their fiberglass symbols of civic pride. Some towns are more creative and novel than others. We're kinda looking forward to the Sock Monkey statues in Illinois. Bennington, Vermont is holding their "Moosefest," featuring 57 moose statues, next weekend! ]Address: 626 State Street, Erie, PA
