Gerlach, Nevada - Folk Art Tombstones

Just outside the desert town of Gerlach is a mile-long road along the Black Rock desert where a former resident -- he died about three years ago -- built a series of headstones with social comments and tributes to area residents. There are also funky structures and designs.

Close to Gerlach, too, at the junction of the Smoke Creek Desert, is Planet X, a 60's inspired pottery studio with a signed pothole road and earthy, quirky pottery objects. The Black Rock desert is the home of the annual Burning Man celebration and is the site where the current world record for the highest land speed was reached. [Lee Juillerat, 11/11/2000]
