Mermaid City - Community Art Project

Norfolk, Virginia has over 300 mermaids, ten feet long and the "Heart & Art Mermaid Story Walking Trails." More mermaids are being made daily for this massive public art project that is still alive and growing six years after its beginning! [Lisa Suhay, 12/03/2006]

[RA: Though not really giving Weeki Wachee serious competition for the "City of Mermaids" title, Norfolk mermaids are identical statues modified by artists, similar to other community art projects (though these are said to be more permanent). Norfolk, Virginia has hundreds of 10-foot-long mermaid sculptures all over the city. They are the city's permanent symbol. Playing "Find the Mermaids" has become a huge tourist pastime. Nobody has found them all...yet. [Lisa Suhay, 07/28/2004]
