Sharpsburg, Maryland - Civil War Dead - Memorial Illumination

Every year, on the first weekend in December, the Civil War battlefield of Antietam is transformed into a beautiful memorial. Over 1,000 volunteers place 23,000 lighted candles all over the battlefield. Each candle represents a casualty from the Battle of Antietam fought on September 17, 1862. [Sue Cunningham, 11/17/2004]

Directions: The entrance to the event is the westbound shoulder of Maryland Route 34.
Admission: Donation.
Hours: Around 6 pm.
