The new plywood groundhog sign was up in Punxsutawney when I passed through town last November. Phil looks splendid in his formal wear. There's an upside-down (south is up) map of town and "Welcome to Punxsutawney" on his chest. Oddly, the sign is oriented in such a way that visitors get their welcome as they are leaving town. My guess is that this is to help visitors find Gobbler's Knob?
[Joe S., 01/31/2013]I live in Punxsutawney and just happened to stumble upon this site. Just wanted to let you all know the Groundhog has been refurbished and has returned to its place of glory at Joe's Drive In along Rte 119 in Punxsutawney. Hope you can stop by and visit him!
[Ashley Jordan, 01/27/2010]The plywood groundhog is no longer standing. All that's left is the outline of wooden supports that once held it in place. Perhaps the greatest groundhog around will one day rise again, but for now, there's not much there.
[Patrick, 07/23/2009]We've read recent reports that the plywood groundhog is not gone for good, but in the shop for much-needed repairs. It will supposedly be back up sometime later this year.
My friend and I went to Punxsutawney to see Phil and the town and when we went to Joe's Drive In, where the plywood groundhog is supposed to be, we were disappointed. The beams where the groundhog should be are there, but the groundhog itself is not.

The large flat cutout rendering of Punxsutawney Phil was still standing at the west end of town when we checked this summer. Looking a little tattered, too.
