The audio hasn't worked in months and the owner of the shrine is aware but has yet to service it. Without the audio it's kinda lame. Save a quarter or give it to the homeless wandering the street.
[Jeff, 01/21/2013]Coin-Operated Elvis Shrine
This coin operated shrine to Elvis impersonators is up and running just fine. We asked the guy at the desk of Goner Records for a little trivia and this is what we learned: the shrine was built by a "Tommy Foster" and traveled around Memphis for a while before being restored by this son "Bennet," who is in the band "The Magic Kids."
When you insert a quarter it lights up, illuminating pictures of various impersonators and playing covered Elvis selections. Worth the quarter for sure!
[Darick Maasen, 07/19/2010]The First Church of Elvis Impersonator is no longer (you could get married at Java by Java's owner Tommy, as Elvis). But one of the main attractions is still right down the street -- the quarter operated shrine to Elvis (think folk art) is in Goner Records.
[shannon Dixon, 07/02/2005]Sadly, First Church of the Elvis Impersonator is no more. The fine folks at the Java Cabana in Midtown informed us that the church is gone and the Elvis shrine is now located at the Center for Southern Culture on Beale Street.
[Velvet Hellvis, 09/23/2002]...this is odd...I live quite near java cabana and I assure you that the name is still the same and the wonderful window display is still there playing for a quarter...
