Storybook Land

From the Roadside America 35mm slide archives: In 1985, a gender-ambiguous Christopher Robin hammered the tail nail on Eeyore the Donkey. Over the decades, kiddy lit figures at Storybook Land have been upgraded or retired -- so we don't know if this scene endures.

Storybook Gardens

I last visited in 2001 and it has expanded since then. There is a train and a carousel to ride for a nominal fee.

Story Book Land

Story Book Island is a great place for many generations. I am a second generation visitor, and my four children are third generation visitors. I can only hope that they will be able to bring their children to a place that I have cherished since childhood.

It is free, with a donation box near the entrance.

Storybook Land

Storybook Land is a whimsical treasure for all fairytale and Wizard of Oz lovers. The park begins with a collection of big rocks and an old fashioned train station, where you can hitch a ride on a miniature train that travels through Storybook Land and the zoo. After a few play areas, you come across the Storybook Land gem -- the castle. During the summer, plays are performed on the stage inside the open air palace. Surrounding the castle are many figures of famous fairytales, and Wizard of Oz characters. Also in the park is the Land of Oz, where you can walk and see talking trees and the lion's den.

Here's a photo of Storybook Land in Aberdeen, SD from my trip in 2001. This is only a small sampling of the many concrete statues to see at Storybook Land. There are also many living ducks, geese and chickens, and if you are lucky, wild turkeys to see.
