Aluminum Christmas Tree Museum

The world-renowned Aluminum Tree and Aesthetically Challenged Seasonal Ornament Museum and Research Center (commonly known as ATOM) will be on exhibit again this year at the Transylvania Heritage Museum. Many examples of the ultimate sustainable Christmas trees -- chic in the 1950s -- will be included. ATOM has been featured in many media outlets that are especially in-the-know.

ATOM: Aluminum Tree and Ornament Museum

The Aluminum Tree and Aesthetically Challenged Seasonal Ornament Museum and Research Center has moved! I am the curator of the Museum, Stephen Jackson. The Museum, for 2005, will be located in Asheville, NC, about 40 miles northeast north of Brevard (the Museum's location in 2004). The museum will be in the Smith-McDowell House Museum, Asheville's oldest surviving structure. The House museum decorates various rooms in the style of the various eras of the house, 1840s through the 1900s. ATOM will represent the house's incarnation as a Catholic Boy's School in the 1950s and 1960s.

With over 30 trees and thousands of ornaments, the museum highlights the era of vintage aluminum trees: the late 1950's to the early 1970's. The museum is located in the Paul Porter Performing Arts Center on the campus of Brevard College, with operating hours of 10 am to 5 pm, Tuesdays through Saturdays. Suggested donations of $2 for adults, $1 for minors.

Holiday attractions are being dragged out of garages and storage sheds across the nation, dusted, polished, and exhibited for a fleeting few weeks. Whether it's the "World's Largest Christmas Tree with a Live Choir as Ornaments," or the "World's Largest Dreidel," you can bet it'll be gone a month from now....
