Original museum opened in 1982. A fancy multi-million dollar expanded museum opened in May 2015 and features a big outdoor statue of The Duke, and, inside, his 1970s station wagon. The four-room house where he was born is one block east and south.

Winterset has more than just the birthplace of John Wayne. The city park boasts an English hedge maze, a castle turret ("Clark's Tower"), a monument to the Delicious Apple, and one of the bridges of Madison County ("Cutler-Donahue Covered Bridge"). So if you're in town to visit the Duke, be sure to mosey on over to the city park and take a gander.
