- Buck Cemetery. Just east of the junction of Hwy 15 and US Hwy 1, on the north side of US Hwy 1, across from the Hannaford Supermarket, easily visible up on a hill. Parking is in a little lot on adjacent Hinks St.

Colonel Buck burned a witch and her leg rolled out of the bonfire. When he later died, a mysterious leg stain appeared on his tombstone, and won't come off! Or not.

Added details from native of Bucksport: Ida Black was the name of the defendant in a murder trial. The victim was a town member who was hacked up in a ritual of power. I believe that Col. Buck did it and blamed it on her. The "foot" on Col. Buck's tomb is not Ida's. It is one of two body parts missing from the victim's body when found.
Side note: villagers tried to burn down her house (500 Central St.) three times. Each time, the flames were put out. She was hanged at the top of Hinks St. and her ashes were thrown into the river.

The graveside account of Colonel Buck's life differs from what is noted here. The boot and sideways heart stains are very clear nonetheless.
[Gretchen, 05/30/2013]We noted the many discrepancies between the legend and the historical facts... and the town has gone to great effort in its signage to debunk the stories that arose around the stain. But it does no good -- as if the tomb has somehow been cursed by a mad tale it just can't shake!
The tomb is right there off the road, and the leg and foot are very visible. There's a convenient parking lot on Hinks Road right beside the small cemetery, so even though it was raining we were able to bask in its glory.
There are two signs in the cemetery that tell the story of Col. Buck and his tomb.
