The Awakening - Buried Giant

"The Awakening" doesn't look much happier at his new home in the National Harbor than he did over on Hains Point, alas. Now he's probably screaming about all the construction noise.

The Awakening

The Awakening (buried statue of a giant in DC) is going to be moved to National Harbor. According to the Washington Post:"Until now, the piece de resistance of his National Harbor project has been a carefully guarded secret. In the coming months, the outdoor sculpture "The Awakening" will be dug up from Hains Point, its home for the past 27 years, then barged and trucked to an undisclosed location where it will be cleaned and restored."

The Awakening

Just visited the statue the other day, despite the biting cold and treacherous roads, and wow - it was sure worth it! "The Awakening" is still there, and judging by the number of visitors we saw there - this awesome piece of art isn't gonna go anytime soon! It was really cool seeing the giant emerging from the ice and snow, but we'll be back in the spring when the snow melts.

April 2007: Better make it quick, Nat. It was just revealed (4/21) that The Awakening was sold last year to a developer who intends to dig it up (soon) and use it as eye candy for a mall and condos that he's building further down the Potomac.
