Texas Tee Pee Motel Restoration Underway

The Tee Pee Motel in Wharton, Texas, comprised of eleven aged and sagging teepee-shaped structures, is undergoing an extensive restoration by its new owner. This comes as welcome news to hordes of teepee sleepover fans who had to drive to Arizona, California or Kentucky for the last of the Wigwam Villages.

Originally built by George and Toppie Belcher in 1942, Wharton's Tee Pee Motel was abandoned in the 1980s. Twenty years of weather and vandalism punished the local landmark. New owner Blue dolphin Unlimited Investments intends to fully restore the wood and stucco structures -- each of the ten rooms will be decorated in the character of ten Native American tribes. They'll also be equipped with a few modern amenities -- indoor plumbing, fridge, microwave, and a coffeemaker. The Tee Pee complex will include an adjacent RV park.
