Road Trip Camcorder Tips

2)The Tele-Scraper Effect
The eyes are the windows to the Soul, and even with a giant, soul-less fiberglass statue, the eyes are pretty darn important. We like to get up close to a statue's face to show it who's boss -- and that can be tough when the goliath is 20 ft. tall.
We headed to a Happy Half-wit statue in New Jersey, a sub-species of the Muffler Men that we track, and a favorite of summer travelers. To elevate our RCA Small Wonder, we rooted around the car trunk and found a telescoping ice scraper/brush and a couple of rubber bands. We extended the scraper pole, attached the camcorder to the brush end with the rubber bands, and had our own mobile camera boom!
It takes a little trial and error, holding the pole steady, standing on tip toes, while passing cars honk their horns and shriek unprintable epithets of encouragement.
