The exact location of an attraction on wheels is always problematic. Noble creations such as the world’s largest watermelon slice suffer for their mobility. They are often locked away in a barn or a municipal garage, hidden from the public eye.
Thus it is with caution that we pass along news of the new home of the world’s largest skateboard: Wilmington, Ohio. It was built in 2007 at a community college in the upper peninsula of Michigan expressly to be the world’s largest (Yoopers like big things). Twelve people can ride it at once, and it’s 31 feet long — just eclipsing the previous recorder-holder, a 30-footer in Massachusetts.
A business owner in Wilmington thought of building the world’s largest skateboard herself, but decided that it would be easier simply to buy the one in Michigan.
An article in the Wilmington News Journal reports that the skateboard “will show up at local parades and serve as a stage at fundraisers.” We hope that it will be viewable at other times as well — or at least ridden down to nearby Blanchester for a publicity photo next to the world’s largest horseshoe crab.
