Roadside News: Dec. 27, 2008

Superman and Obama.Starting today, RoadsideAmerica.com will post links to news stories we believe would be of interest to road trippers and roadside attraction fans…

  • Time Magazine has featured the uplifting Uplifter Abe Lincoln statue as part of its photo essay, “Obama’s Nation of Hope.” As a senator, Obama posed with other Illinois landmarks, most notably the Superman statue in Metropolis.
  • A man in Marion, Virginia, wants $500,000 to open a “Home of Mountain Dew Museum” and “Moonshine to Motorsports Museum.” It’s a hi-octane combo that — if built — would be worthy additions to our round-up of hard and soft drinks.
  • Death Valley is deliberately keeping itself dark at night. The park rangers say that it’s good for the environment — but it also prevents anyone from seeing how their rocks mysteriously move.
  • A San Clemente, California man has built a 30-foot-tall, hip-shaking Elvis in his back yard. The sign-like, animated figure made of roofing materials looks temporary — even less stable than the real Elvis in his jumpsuit years.
  • Ohio’s iconic Y-Bridge in Zanesville is hosting an arts festival. “I can’t think of a better way to get their art seen. It’s a unique setting, (the Y Bridge) there’s no other place like it in the world.” If that’s the criteria, then bridges like this one and this one should also host arts festivals.
