Motorcycles and road trips are inseparable companions. But recent news stories suggest that more celebrity/unusual cycles are becoming part of the attractions — and that the marriage is sometimes more akin to a shotgun wedding.
Some displays are perfectly natural, such as the current Indiana Jones motorcycle exhibit at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, or the Bronze Elvis On A Motorcycle statue that was unveiled at the world’s largest Harley-Davidson dealership in Ormond Beach, Florida. Appropriate and sensible, and for non-gearheads the Milwaukee exhibit also includes a snake display and a “Tomb Raiding” treasure hunt for geocachers.
But how does one figure this memorial tribute bike, currently on display in Daytona Beach, Florida, for a Navy SEAL who drowned crossing a river in Afghanistan? Or this psychedelic creation built as a tribute to Janis Joplin, which was recently on display in her home town museum in Port Arthur, Texas? We don’t doubt the creator’s sincerity, but could whiskey-drinking Janis even stay on a motorcycle?
And stranger bikes are in the works. One will be unveiled on April 26 to mark the 80th anniversary of Howe Caverns in Howes Cave, New York — a “cave-themed motorcycle.” If it doesn’t look like a bat or have stalactite handlebars, we’ll be disappointed.
