Moldy Taxidermy Tips

Mike B. sent us information and advice on tackling “moldy taxidermy,” the bane of wildlife exhibits and museums everywhere:

Wild pig, WV Farm Museum“Mold on taxidermy mounts is a result of excessive humidity/moisture. Taxidermy mounts are, in essence, leather. Leather is prone to mold. A top quality moldicide can manage this. Do not try cleaning with bleach. Wiping mold only helps it spread. Also a dehumidifier would work great. Mold cannot live in UV light. Subject the mounts to sunlight for a while, but don’t leave them exposed to sun permanently.”

Okay! We’re moving that two-headed calf onto the roof for a bit….
