Jackalope Proposed as Wyoming's Official Mascot
A bill to declare the half-antelope, half-jackrabbit jackalope as Wyoming's "Official Mythical Creature" is making its way through state legislation. In January, Representative David Edwards proposed House Bill No. HB0004 to give the Jackalope official status in the state where it originated. The Wyoming House of Representatives voted 45-12 in favor. In February, the bill moved into an appropriate standing committee on the state Senate side.
A taxidermist in Douglas, Wyoming, Doug Herrick, created the first jackalope by attaching antelope antlers to a stuffed jackrabbit in 1939. Today, a large Jackalope statue stands in a Douglas park.
There's been some discussion that the bill might allow Wyoming to "protect" the Jackalope as a legal trademark. The bill, if passed, would go into effect in July 2005.
