Fabulous Prizes for 1 Millionth Missile Museum Visitor
One of our favorite Apocalypse Almost-Now attractions, the Titan Missile Museum outside of Tucson, Arizona, is counting up to its one millionth visitor. If its present attendance trends continue, that milestone tourist will walk through the turnstiles either on February 10 or 11, 2007, although museum director Yvonne Morris concedes that a surge could push it forward to February 8 or even 7.
That surge may be inevitable, as the museum is making it known that lucky #1,000,000 will receive a raft of wonderful gifts, including a basket with a Titan Missile Museum t-shirt, baseball cap, and unique "porthole" glasses and mugs inset with photos of Titan missiles being launched. In addition, he or she will receive -- and this really is special -- a replica, numbered launch key for a Titan 2 missile silo commander's console, the same key that would have sent megatons of USA justice screaming skyward to spank the enemies of Democracy and Freedom. The key will be mounted on a presentation "1 millionth visitor" plaque, inside a glass box on which is written, "In case of emergency, break glass."
Yvonne says that the key is the "coolest" prize that she could possibly give, and we agree. She is also appreciative of the many visitors that Roadside America has brought to her museum, and has generously offered to add a bonus gift. "If the one millionth visitor mentions 'Roadside America,'" she said, "I will personally autograph a poster of the missile to them, not only in my capacity as the director of the museum, but as a former crew commander who served at this site."
