Abraham Lincoln's Tomb Vandalized

Obscene words were spray-painted on President Abraham Lincoln's tomb, in Springfield, IL, authorities said. The walls on the observation deck and the base of the Lincoln bust that greets visitors at the entrance to the tomb were spray painted. Human excrement and a T-shirt were found on the observation deck.

There were no suspects. "We are considering it strictly a case of random and mindless vandalism," said Lt. Mike Geiger of Springfield police.

Black plastic is being used to cover the graffiti. A high-powered spray-washing device and special cleaning solution will be used on the walls to remove them. The tomb attracts 180,000 to 200,000 visitors annually.
