Something fishy in liquid refreshment
What red-blooded American male wouldn't want to drink a mermaid's bath water?
That was probably the thinking of St. Petersburg, FL, city officials when they announced plans to bottle and sell the water that flows from the "City of Mermaids," Weeki Wachee Spring. St. Petersburg has owned the spring since the 1930s, yet, curiously, it did not bottle the water during the Depression - perhaps because the public was not ready for such a free-spirited exercise in free enterprise. Happily, we are much more open-minded today about how we make money, and Councilwoman Kathleen Ford points out that selling bottles of "Magic Mermaid Water" - the water that Weeki Wachee mermaids swim in - could generate revenue that the city needs.
