Auction Battle for Muffler Man
This auction in 2000 resulted in the removal of the big cowboy from Boonville.
Boonville, MO's Cowboy Muffler Man will have a new home at the Kansas City Children's Museum. KCCM vice president David Disney showed up at the much-anticipated auction on April 29, intent on acquiring the big guy to donate to the museum.
The bidding was heated, with Disney battling a California developer who was placing bids by cell phone, hoping to install the cowboy at the entrance of a new mall. Disney finally triumphed with a bid of $9,800 for the muffler man, as a crowd of locals applauded.
According to owner Erving Toellner, the Muffler Man had stood at the gas station property since 1972 (which was sold and became the First Amendment Adult Video Store last year).
